Plugin updates

I have installed a few plugins that I am trying out.

The first is for Technorati – I have yet to list on there, as I thought WordPress automatically generated the Technorati tags as part of the ping process for Technorati.  Apparently Not.

SimpleTags

So I have installed SimpleTags.  You can download it here along with some tips on customization, which I ignored.  I have installed it “out of the box” and I am quite happy with it.  This will depend on the theme you are using, as the customizations are basically css.

Google (XML) Site Map generator

Another great plug in is the XML site map generator available here.  The plugin works out of the box and generates XML site maps for your site.  This helps robots to index your site.

HeadSpace 2

I downloaded and installed HeadSpace 2, but have not actually started using it yet.  HeadSpace helps with the SEO aspects of your posts.  I will get to adding the titles etc, but I always seem to forget it when I click Publish!  It installs out of the box and places itself into the editor so it is there when you post.  I am just swak when it comes to adding the content for HeadSpace.

Light Social WordPress plugin

The Light Social WordPress plugin is a great way to let your readers promote your posts. It automatically adds a number of the more popular social sites. To remove any (or add your own) you can easily edit the file in the editor. A very easy install and a quick, good looking change on the blog.

Possibly Related Recent Posts WordPress Plugin

The Possibly Related Recent Posts WordPress Plugin also makes a dramatic change to the blog in that all you do is install it and the related posts appear! Magic! I love it. This is also a great way to get readers into your archives and to build deep links. A great plugin.

WordPress Database Backup

This plugin is probably my all time favourite plugin.  It is an out of the box installation, a simple configuration and tada you can have cron jobs emailling you database backups.  It is flexible and powerful – yet simple.  It took me about 2 minutes to figure it out!  A truly great plugin.  Note however, that this plugin backs up the database, but NOT the pages and media.  Go to the site here.

I discovered a couple of days ago that the default pings in WordPress are not that thorough! You need to add a Technorati ping to the list. Let me know if you are struggling!

    Dave,

I thought I’d mention I’ve discovered Technorati no longer listens to pings. Getting listed seems to involve signing up and a few other bits. I’ve hopefully worked out the dos and don’ts and will be posting instructions on my blogs tomorrow (if it all works) if you care to call over.

    Thanks Keith!

I have been using technorati tags to get listed there, but also have them listed for pings – What made you realize they are not taking pings anymore?

Thanks a lot, I’ll be watching for your post – I’ll link to it from here if you like :)
